How the draw works
With Fours, you get as many groups of four as possible and the rest play in threes, so 13 players play in groups of 4, 3, 3 and 3. With Threes, it’s the other way round: 3, 3, 3 and 4. Nobody plays alone, and nobody plays in a two unless you allow it.
Over several rounds, you get groups where as few pairs as possible play together twice, and you see how many repeats are left. The draw tries many arrangements in under a second and keeps the best one, so it can’t promise that’s the fewest possible.
Groups with no repeats at all exist only for some sizes. 16 golfers in fours can play 5 rounds with every pair meeting exactly once. For 32 golfers in fours, 10 rounds without a repeat is possible and 11 is not.
Even teams use the ABCD draw. You sort the players by handicap, lowest first, or by quota, highest first, and split them into tiers: A, B, C and D for teams of four. Each team gets one player from each tier, drawn at random within the tier. A team’s quota is its players’ quotas added up; to work out each player’s quota first, use the quota calculator.
